It is nice to see a composer so well represented on youtube.com. There are numerous performances of his works on this site. But now you can see and hear the man, as interviewed by award winning journalist Hugh Downs (born 1921). Copland was born in Brooklyn in 1900, and by age 25 he was awarded the first Guggenheim Fellowship awarded a composer. He was later associated with the New School of Social Research, Harvard University and the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. He is best remembered for compositions Fanfare for the Common Man, Billy the Kid, A Lincoln Portrait and Appalachian Spring (for friend Martha Graham). For his movie score to The Heiress (1949), he received the Academy Award. |
